Windows XP Media shows COMxxx up to 256
Guess serial ports are here to stay, at least
in some incarnation

Thanks to K5NA the problem has been resolved by going into control panel 
and then:

- Click  system
- Click hardware
- Click device manager
- Click Ports
- Richt click the usb com port that needs to be changed and select 
properties
- Click the port settings tab
- Click advanced
- Select the com port from the drop down menu

Worked like a champ.
