John,

I'm 64 years old. I probably don't have 'several decades' left before
Microsoft gets Vista and/or its successors operating properly! Besides,
what ever happened to the concept of delivering the customer a working
product for his money? I don't believe Dell gave me Vista on their machine
for free.

I spent 15 years in an IT department for a Fortune 50 company too, so I know
some of the games that get played there. I've used Windows since the 3.1
days and its main problem has always been that it is an over hyped and under
performing product. Like any product, software or hardware, that attempts
to do everything for everybody it is ultimately doomed to fall short of
expectations somewhere along the line.

In this case, my expectation of Vista is that it should let me (as
administrator) download a small 45 kb text file into the folder of my choice
without a hitch. Apparently Vista has a problem with even this simple
mundane task. I hope you're young enough to be able to wait around long
enough for Bill and company to get the kinks out!

73,
Gary AL9A

Gary,

Vista is not a PIA.

Vista is a very powerful and ultra-complex piece of software. The software
took years to write. In addition, it will take several decades to get it
operating properly.

Shame there is not guarantees on operating system software.

Think I got it with a work around. I used 'Save Target As...' again, but
this time saved wl_cty.dat to my AL9A/Downloads folder. From there I copied

the file to C:\Program Files\WriteLog\Programs and the file updated to
02/12/2008. Vista was its usual PIA and demanded administrator permission
to perform the copy, even though I am already logged in as administrator! I

then ran the 'Convert CTY to WriteLog' utility and it appears to have been
successful. Are there any calls I can enter into WL to check if the file is

working correctly? So why didn't web download from WL work? Or doesn't the

web download update the file dates in the Programs directory?

Gary AL9A
