only way I could find to close it in windows XP was to ctrl/alt/delete and
use that method.

I use the VE7CC "cluster user" front-end:
http://www.ve7cc.net
It has a built-in list of clusters you can reach via Telnet. If the
connection crashes, then just have VE7CC re-connect (or connect to a
new node). The connection between WriteLog and the VE7CC program will
NEVER go down.
