[WriteLog] Problems With Writelog

Hi, Mike, and welcome back to contesting!

A lot of us have problems like you describe below. Starting with Vista, I
think, Microsoft began storing all modified files in dedicated areas
separate from the original installation location for program executable
files and drivers. It is confusing, but supposedly safer and less prone to
messing up program files.

To further confuse us, we all seem to have inconsistent experiences with
where these new file locations are on each of our computers. That may be
due to how each of us has Administrator privileges allocated or some other
configuration of our Windows installation.

I don't even know if there is consistency across all of my own PCs, but here
is where things are on this specific Windows 7 machine:

C:\Users\muns\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Windows\writelog.ini

C:\ProgramData\WriteLog\wl_cty.dat (plus all the files generated by
webupdate)

C:\Users\All Users\WriteLog\wl_cty.dat (plus all the files generated by
webupdate)

The latter two locations seem to get updated in parallel and equally, which
doesn't make sense to me, but that's what happens when I do a webupdate or
just convert cty.dat to wl_cty.dat. (BTW, webupdate often produces an older
wl_cty.dat than what you get from doing the independent Convert CTY to
WriteLog applet. So, run this applet last.)

Webupdate does produce files, e.g., WlWebUpdate.zip, with the current
date/time stamp in both locations noted above. So, that is different than
your experience below.

One thing I would do for sure is make sure you are doing all this with
Administrator privileges. That will at least eliminate that possible issue.

When you figure this out, let me know what you learned.

Subject: [WriteLog] Problems With Writelog

Hi Gang:

I am just starting to get back into Contesting. I have been a faithful user
of Writelog over the years, but now I have run into a problem.

I am using the latest version of Writelog and here is what I am finding.

1. If I do the webupdate of data files, where do they go.

2. I am finding duplicate and triplicate files throughout the C:/ Drive, but
the Webupdate does not produce anything with a year stamp of 2015 in the 2 x
directories listed below.

I have been using the same hard drive from Windows 7, and now Windows 10.

The webupdate from within Writelog take 2 seconds and then tells me to
Writelog will reboot. There is no way it can update files that fast.

Here is what I am finding

C:\Program Files/Writelog has 227 Files

C:\ProgramData/Writelog has 236 Files
C:\ProgramData/Writelog/Wiwebupdate has nothing with a year stamp of 2015

C:\Users\All Users\Writelog has 236 Files
C:\Users\All Users\Writelog\Wiwebupdate has nothing with a year stamp of
2015

Also I can't find a Writelog ini file anywhere.....

Anybody having the same issue
