In Win-Test and DXlog, type 'NOESM' in the call sign entry window to disable
ESM.  Type 'ESM' to enable it.  When disabled, there are no surprises.  Just
press the Fn message key you want at any given time.  All Enter does is log
the QSO.

A different ESM script can be written and substituted for the default one.
The ESM behavior can be whatever you want, including none.  There is one
detail in the default Win-Test ESM script that I dislike, so I modified it
to my preference.

ESM fans operate better with it, but many (most?) people find ESM horribly
disruptive and frustrating.  It's how one's mind works during the QSO
phases.

WriteLog's ESM works great for me and my S&P messages differ from my Run
messages.  Not recommended for most folks though.

I think both WinTest and TR4WIN have only one mode:  ESM with different
macros for run and S&P. I don't know if there's any way to turn it off. I
had one guest op come over and he had to install TR4WIN because that's what
he likes. It would drive me crazy. I've used WinTest a couple of times and
was able to use it, but had to be very careful not to do something that it
considered unusual .. which would result in QLF.

Maybe I've just become too comfortable with WL, but I like the idea of me
being in charge of the radio and the conversation. The logger should follow
me. Not the other way around. I suppose like most things, you can get used
to it with time and practice.
