[Yaesu] FT-1000 PIN Diode "Mod"

As an owner of an early FT-1000, I was wondering if there's any information 
available that gives a good technical explanation of the advantage to 
changing to PIN type diodes for the RF unit's BPF switching.  How is the IMD 
seen with the non-PIN diodes prevented with the PIN diodes?  Was the circuit 
change ever published as a service bulletin that is accessible?
