Hi Carol and everyone,
Thanks for the interesting analysis! Actually, exchange rates are a little
tricky, as my students will tell you. The exchange rate in July 1971 was
Y357=$1. We need to adjust for effects of inflation since 1971 (CPI was 40.6
in July 1971, and 183.30 in April 2003). This means that what cost $40.60 in
July 1971 now costs $183.30, or about 4.5 times the cost in 1971 $. The
actual price of the FT101 would be $1745.00.
Here's the details and relevant websites if anyone is interested.
1971 015358.02 NA NA
1971 025357.55 -1.564% NA
1971 036357.52 -0.101% NA
1971 049357.50 -0.067% NA
1971 052357.41 -0.302% NA
1971 062357.41 0.000% NA
1971 073357.40 -0.034% NA
1971 086355.78 -5.306% NA
1971 092338.02 -45.908% NA
1971 108331.11 -21.953% NA
1971 117328.75 -8.226% NA
1971 123320.07 -27.465% NA
Y138,000= $386.55 in USD in July 1971 (the rate was stable the first half of
Next we need to adjust the USD purchase value by finding out the CPI value
to adjust for inflation in the US.
CPI Historical Data
Consumer Price Index For All Urban Consumers:
1982-84=100, Seasonally Adjusted
Source: U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics
The April 2003 CPI was 183.3. This means that what cost $100.00 in the base
year of the index (1982) now takes $183.30 to buy. Going back to July 1971,
we see the CPI adjusted backward from 1982 was 40.6, meaning it only cost
$40.60 to purchase the same goods, which now cost $183.30.
OK, so if the FT101 cost us $386.55 in July 1971, adjusting for inflation
into todays dollars, the index has climbed from 40.6 to 183.3, or about 4.5
times. This means the FT101 actually would cost us $1745.00 in todays
dollars, adjusted for inflation.
