[Yaesu] roofing filters

I recently sold an Icom 756 Pro II with the all DSP based IF/Detector
system.....much like the new 7800. It didn't have the roofing filter in it.
There is no denying the benefits of the roofing filter concept but I'm not
sold on the all DSP based stuff yet. Having all those bandwidths available
are nice but I found myself typically using pretty much the same ones each
time, that provided a balance between audio quality and rejection. As for
all the other bells and whistles they just got in the way so I went back to
something very simple with all the buttons I most commonly use....a good ole
FT-1000D. I did own the two together long enough to do on the air
comparisons of the receivers using a military HF receiver multicoupler and
the FT-1000 stood it ground. There was nothing I could tune on the Icom
that I couldn't hear on the FT-1000D no matter how weak or strong. Using
the timewave audio DSP in the Yaesu speaker worked almost as well as the
Icom's IF based DSP processing for noise and every bit as good for hets...

Haven't missed the Icom at all! Then picked up a mint MP with an
intermittent DSP bug and have run it with the 1000D and find the same
thing....the two are very close and the MP is loaded with Inrad IF filters.
When working DX I find myself using the D...on CW I like the MP's memory
keyer for contesting and DXing. I will probably end up buying a good memory
keyer and putting it on the D and selling the MP at some point....after I
get the DSP bugged out...

Someone's question about an all digital radio....maybe someday once they
fully mature but today I more prefer a conventional radio. I also don't
care much for operating my radio via computer control....I guess I just like
twisting the knobs....

I have a bunch of tube stuff to for the guy saying get a Valve radio....

The R-390A series with it's tracking front end is great but not much of a
SSB rig without a bunch of massaging....

As a matter of fact on SWBC I have a Hammarlund SP-600 modified by the late
John Leary that blows everything in the shack away....they hear carrier it
demods audio.....pretty amazing.

Cecil....
