The idea was tried 40 years ago!
See "Imporved Grounded Grid Operation" by Paul Barton, Sept. 1962, 73
Magazine, pp 34-36.
The author used a 6X4 (rectifier tube), with both sections connected
in parallel, said tube providing both the diode and necessary R.
He also noted that even drivers incorporating tube output stages can
exhibit instability when driving bare input GG amps.
