Sorry! Getting two trains of thought mixed up, and it's early in the
morning. Please ignore that one.

0.5W resistors with 3500V dc rating are readily available and cheap - maybe
not well suited to the particular situation, but probably overlooked where
they could be a useful solution elsewhere.
