You shouldn't be connecting it in the plate lead. Measure the cathode current, 
which is at low voltage.

What's the resistance measured across the terminals? If it's a 2-A meter it 
should be pretty low, a fraction of an ohm. You could test with a variable dc 
supply, a series resistance bank, and a separate meter with known calibration, 
like a DVM. You don't have to go all the way to 2 amps. If both meters read, 
say, 100 mA, at the same time, you know the scale calibration is correct.
