Lew pointed out that the NEC has a section on amateur radio antennas.
I did a google search and saw a little bit about what it said.

I asked what he meant by saying I "must" follow it.
Both of you came back with scary words that looked like maybe
I'm going upriver for awhile.

It seems that in my state (Colorado) the statute has an exemption
for radio systems.  whew!  I'm glad I wasn't breaking the law.
I am not a lawyer.  Anyone who wants to follow up on this is on their
own.

It looks like the NEC in this case does not apply to me.
So the use of "must" really isn't "must".  But I'm willing to accept
that it is a good way to do things.   The problem is that when
those recommendations become attached to government then  there are
things like fees and inspectors and neighbors who call the cops.
