The performance of a well designed yagi is independent of the driven 
element....within reason.

However if it is operated off the frequency of best F/B then it will of 
course be reduced and that is a function of the parasitic elements. The 
driven element will show a higher VSWR if the design is rather narrow 
band.

Another reason would be feedline radiation which can be minimized with a 
good sleeve balun as described everywhere for decades.
