REPLY:
A carefully controlled mis-tune is best for optimum SSB operation. The
best way to avoid splatter is to tune up for max power output with a
carrier equal to your max PEP, then slightly increase the loading
until the power just drops off one or two percent. This gives you a
bit of headroom, and if your trnasceiver's internal ALC is working as
it should, you will not splatter.
Tuning up with a pulser that has the same duty cycle as SSB and NOT
increasing the loading as above gives you the greatest power output
but also zero headroom before the splatter begins.
As I have said before, trying to squeeze the last possible watt out of
your SSB rig is not good practice and will surely make you unpopular
on the air.
