One advantage of the reversible "L" is that the tuning/matching function is 
generally optimized with one set of variables.  But care is needed in the 
switched reversing design to keep high coil Q across the HF spectrum.  Any 
benefit in the switched L design can be undermined by long lead lengths 
going to/from switching relays, for example.
