A 4-1000 can be used in the BTI amp in place of the 3-1000.  In fact, the 
manual even covers the subject.

I had a BTI amp and did so.  However, the voltage from the standard version 
BTI is rather puny for a grounded grid 4-1000, and performance suffers.  One 
option I thought about trying, is to unground the screen and add some screen 
voltage to help coax the electrons to the plate.
