Thanks much for the responses. I checked everything suggested but no joy.
I even resoldered all connections. The capacitors were put in by a previous
owner and are supposed to be new. They checked out okay.
The arcing sound is definitely coming from the power supply area but even in
the dark I can't see the flash of light, bizarre. It's time to sell the
SB-1000 at a bargain price.
