I think that's not quite correct. A 3-500z running at full bore dissipates
500 watts of heat. As I understand it, most of that heat is radiated by
infrared radiation. Much of that infrared energy passes through the glass
envelope, but much of it is also absorbed and heats up the glass, which is
why forced air cooling is required.

Thermal radiation goes as the fourth power of temperature, which means a
small increase in temperature can cause the radiated energy to skyrocket.
That's why you can burn your finger touching the glass on a 100W light bulb
or, more generally, why the sun bathes the Earth with a thousand watts per
square meter, even though the Earth sits in a vacuum.
