I count myself as lucky that I received my SS CW & SSB plaques. I received
certificates for these same contests at my home in La Crosse last week.
However, the plaques were sent to my (outdated) callbook address.
Sounds like a risky proposition to send these beautiful & expensive plaques
via the callbook address, especially when all contest entry forms had the
correct address on them.
Fortunately, the callbook address is my mother's house, so I do have the
plaques (Man are they nice!!! I'm like a proud new daddy!)

at dayton cac meet, i suggested that the novice roundup be changed to a

contest: the Maxim Classic
time: 24 hours out of 36 over a weekend
operators: at least one general or above and as many tech/novices as you want.
number of tech/novice ops must equal or exceed the number of
higher class ops.
object: work as many stations as possible, expose vhf hams to hf bands
use priviledges and call of the highest class op.
categories: novices and tech must be m/s, m/2, or m/m with higher class.
others must be single op only.
scoring: multi stations can work anyone. single ops can work only multis.
states/provinces and countries are mults, ssb qso's count 2 points
each, cw qso's count 5 points, normal power categories. Multis
sign call stroke multi, on cw call/m.
this idea was inspired by a very active tech who asked to come over and
see my station during arrl dx because he had never seen anything except a

100% on point. #2 doesn't have much meaning, since neither Novice
nor Tech licenses expire. There are already several VHF and up
contests where no-code techs have everything they need to complete
on equal footing with everybody else. The problem is getting them
to participate for the first time and get hooked. Maybe the answer
for VHF contests is "Rookie awards" -- Certificates and pins for
top scoring rookies. Hopefully, this attracts operators in
situations #1 and #3.
On the novice side, I'd like to see a "novice chase" or some kind
of contest where the rest of us have an incentive to create a full
blown pile-up on every novice we hear. Being "wanted" is part of
the contest bug. I'd suggest a 12 hour QSO party format, 150W limit
to all entrants, twice-per-year "chase", where only novice/tech+ to
novice/tech+ and novice/tech+ to other QSO's count.
Also, don't forget that any contest could include elements of a
"chase", for instance SS QSO's with a novice/tech+ count double
points, etc.
Some one else mentioned pairing a novice and tech+ to form a multi-op
team. How about a "pro/am" format contest, where a novice/tech+ op
teams with a higher class op and operates two-operator with
all privledges? This could be a good way to get in some operator
training and infect a new operator with "the bug". A control operator
is somebody with the power switch within arm's length.

In other words, the Novice Roundup (really the "Technician Roundup"),
now appears to be less than half as popular as it was 21 years ago.

8 years old!

1. After getting my NCJ I read Trey's article/point & counter-point
on the WPX. Trey is right on target. The game has been changed from a
30-hole golf game to a 36-hole golf game. The only thing CQ did to
confuse us was to use the same contest name-WPX. If CQ wanted more
DX operations then why not start a DX-pedition class that goes the
FULL contest time period. That way the DX-peditions get full use
of their week-end and more of the "little" guys stay interested w/
the 30 hour rule.
2. Novice round-up. Didn't know it was broken. If the no-coders
need a contest, give them one. Don't mess up the round-up.
The round-up could use something to encourage NON-novices to come
work the novices.
3. SS pins/mugs, etc. A thought here: Another way to get MORE SS
activity is to start a 10 meter single band class for this contest.
Think: There is a group of license that can NOT compete in SS because
they can only operate 10 meters in the SSB contest. This would increase
10 meter activity and benefit all. (also for those with other obligations
& "have" to get some sleep at night could still be competitive on 10 S/B.)
It is likely more logs would show up from the 10 meter SSB operators.
4. Hope to see you all at HamCom (DFW) second week-end of June!
5. Regional reporting. I'm more for reporting by state or sections. I'm
interested in how I fared against STX & NTX. Even WTX has propagation
different than here. (I'm in STX) I'm not as concerned about how I fared
against someone in Kansas or N.Mex. , the regional is better than USA
reporting, but the regions still appear large and misadjusted. HOWEVER, it
is a plus to see the USA standings on the single band efforts and see what
equipment people are using.

I dont buy it! The NRs popularity is a direct function of 10 meter prop-
agation. The cycle is low...10 is dead (mostly..up here)...so it looks
like the NR is a nonevent. I'm personally getting a bit tired of seeing
"fixes" for so many events. The change in WPX wiped out a whole slate of
records and tradition. Any "changes" to existing contests will result in
similar shakeups. It seems that now that contesters can "talk" to each
other on INTERNET that everyone seems to have a "fix" for something. Lets
take a deep breath before changing an event, just becuase its easier now
to talk about it. As for NR, I'm for continuing the tradition as it is and
was. If no code techs want to join in, then they must get the priveleges to
do so. If we want to have an event for them....that's another story...and
one worth persuing. Lots of good ideas popping up on how to do it...but
leave the NR as is! Like the 2 person team thing...thats great.
