I must agree with you that one size doesn't fit all, but being on the contest
reflector, I interpreted
comments made to be in regards to contesting, not general dxing. The P5 is an
extreme example
and if recent dxpeds to rare ones is any sort of indication, they are probably
not going to show in
the contest, but will concentrate on other modes to give "the deserving" a new
one. If it gets to the
point that the P5 shows up in the contest, there's going to be such a hellish
pileup that I'm not going
to waste my time on it anyway.
A number of folks go to some fairly rare locations FOR CONTESTS, and the vast
majority of them
do id after every call. And those same folks frequently achieve high scores or
even win the contest.
I'm not sure what your analogy has to do with the discussion. It's rude to
drive on the shoulder, and
it's rude to butt into a line. I maintain that in a contest it's rude not to
sign after every Q. Your analogy
would seem to indicate that it's stupid or illegal for me, running low power
and a tribander, to try to
compete with the big boys (in a contest or otherwise). I don't understand what
this has to do with
frequency of id'ing in a contest. If I interpret what your are saying
correctly, I vehemently disagree
with it more than the id issue.
I have some thoughts concerning dxpeditions (non-contest) infrequently iding,
but that belongs
elsewhere.
I respect your opinion in terms of general dxing to a large extent, but in
terms of contesting I
am not flexible, because my time is just as important as that of the person at
the other end of the
pileup, regardless of how much wealth it took to get him there!

It obviusly depends on who the "hunter" is and who is the "hunted". If I'm
operating from P5AA, and the band is full of WB6's, all on cw sending at
10 wpm.....I can assure you that I would very firmly feel that my time is
more valuable that yours (theirs)!!
It seems as if you are saying....."No matter what the circumstances are, the
rare DX station must operate exactly how I want him to, or I won't work him"
Thus, One size fits All !! That's ludicrous OM.
Circumstances make all the difference. Flexibility to respond to different
circumstances are what makes champions. It is absolutely NOT needed for
a rare DX station to sign his call sign after every QSO. Maybe in some cases
it's appropriate to sign your call after each QSO, in other cases after
each 2 or 3
may be okay, and in other cases after each 10 QSO's might be the right amount.
Remember that the DX operator is operating to maximize HIS rate, not yours.
In my judgement your analogy of butting into traffic, or driving on the
shoulder
should be changed a bit. It's more like a 6 lane highway, and the Big Guns
are
running in the fast lane. If you're driving an Amish horse & buggy, better
get in
the slow lane, or you're gonna get run over. AND, if you choose to take your
horse and buggy over to the fast lane, you better stoke the horse up with some
high powered hay so that you can "Do as the Romans do, when in Rome"!!
