State QSO parties, while some of them have the trappings of a "contest",
are more commonly just exactly what their name implies -- a party -- and
a reason for a population with some affinity (in this case geographic)
to get on the airwaves to work each other (or the world). Other similar
events are QCWA, 10-10, FOC, Armed Forces Day, and RNARS QSO party. If
you're not in the affinitive population, or have no interest in working
another 83 stations from New Hampshire or bagging new counties in North
Dakota), then ignore them.
On the other hand, if you want to interest a newcomer in contesting,
rent an RV, drag your radio and the newcomer to Norman County (1
resident ham) in the next Minnesota QSO Quest, and have a ball for 6 or
8 hours.
