I've wondered if it might be that amateur radio provides a unique opportunity 
to practice speaking English with native speakers of various dialects, a 
highly valuable skill in today's world.

In Europe this is propagationally no problem even with simple equipment.  Not 
so from JA. And of course it's irrelevant from the USA.
