I've had good luck with a simple closed loop, large, 20 - 50 feet up. Large =
300 foot on a side... your size may vary, although as long as it is about a
wavelength in circumference, there should be a plenty of signal to work with.
The Adcock antenna would be work looking at for a smaller version.
As for the beverages, a single 1/4 radial worked here for some very poor
soil.
A short loaded vertical may turn some decent results too.
