It's not just the Doubletree and it's not just Dayton.

We spent a few days at the end of June at a Westin in Dallas. They also had
an exorbitant daily charge for Internet access, which I knew in advance so I
forgoed a laptop. They told me in advance that they did have computers
available in their "business center" for guest use... what they didn't tell
me was that it cost $6.95 for every 15 minute block.

They also nailed us on an overnight parking charge. In fact, they got me
twice; the first time, they charged me a valet fee (pay cash) on our
arrival, and then when we left for a short time and returned later, charged
me an additional daily fee (to our room) for leaving the rental with them
overnight. Now I did get the valet fee back when I picked up the car the
next day to return it to the airport and questioned what had happened. But
when we went to check out, I found that the parking folks had neglected to
tell the front desk that we'd only kept the car 1 overnight, not 4.

My point is that ANY major hotel these days has nickel and dime charges for
anything and sometimes everything. Ask questions, and review your bill
before checkout... and if it doesn't look right, challenge it.

Oh, I also found out (too late) that THAT Westin would provide refrigerators
and microwaves for the rooms free of charge... if they were reserved in
advance and if they didn't run out before your arrival. We'll know for next
time. Like I said -- ask questions, and review your bill.

BTW, you won't see me staying at either the Crowne Plaza or the Doubletree.
They're both nice hotels, but I'd rather spend my shekels on tsotchkes than
an expensive hotel room. There ARE other alternatives... check around.

73, ron w3wn

I hope you guys will check out the total cost of staying at the
Doubletree. There might be some unpleasant surprises.

This past July, I attended to the Central States VHF Conference in St.
Louis, which was held at a Doubletree. Beyond the $120 room rate for a
single room, I was annoyed at the charge of $15/day for Internet access
and $16/day for a run-of-the-mill continental breakfast. I declined
both of those opportunities for them to raid my wallet, and I'm not sure
what the charges are at the Dayton Doubletree, but I would point out
that at the Crowne Plaza, both of those items are complimentary.

I'm not in any way trying to defend the CP's rate increase, just make
sure you count all of the charges when comparing apples to oranges.
Perhaps those extras I mentioned aren't important to you...
