Numerous survey's by statisticians to determine the criteria for the
best statistical tool has always shown the strongest metric is
always the FIRST tool used.

Hi,
different contests, different regions, different outcome. Here is what
participants in Worked All Germany Contest used 2013 (scroll to the
bottom):
http://www.darc.de/referate/dx/contest/wag/en/newsarchives/ - some strong
"local content" with i.e. UCX-log.
Only gut feeling: WT seems to be widely used by high scoring stations while
N1MM seems to be more evenly distributed from category winners, too, to more
casual operators.
Besides specific requirements for ports or networking I would support the
view of "a Pepsi/Coke"-argument and recommend anyone to check a variety of
programs. That allows to find the one feeling most reliable and comfortable
even at 0430 local time...
