W1VE makes a great point here. I still remember operating 80m from KL7Y
many years ago. Dan warned me not to bother calling unless the other
station was at least 20 dB over 9. I didn't believe him until I tried. He
was right! Later I did several contests from VY1JA and saw the same
thing. On the other hand, I spent many years operating as ZF2NT during the
winter months and was able to snag stations with one call who were barely
ESP-level to me. But as Gerry also mentions, some operators are simply
awesome despite the conditions. I will never forget getting through to
G3SXW in the days when he was in his QRP mode. He was one of a kind when
it came to digging out weak signals.
