We did this 10+ years ago.  No issues.  I assume the same people
whining about efficient lighting now were the ones whining about
efficient cars 35 years ago.
Between the efficient lighting and the efficient ground-source
heat-pump, my electric bill only tops $100 in the coldest months (we
only have propane for the grill, nothing else).  I guess if my utility
was for-profit (it's a coop) I would have a reason to enrich them but
wouldn't I have to own their shares to benefit?  Personally, I just
don't see why I would do that.
