Cortland (KA5S) said "MY RFI hunting has almost all been with loops or
yagis -- and by ear.", and my experience has been exactly the same.
What's much more important than an S meter is the ability to switch in a
lot of attenuation when you get close to the source. Without the ability
to switch in a lot of attenuation (20 db or more) when close to the source
an S meter (or your ear) is useless, and when you put in a lot of
attenuation then you just rotate the antenna for loudest signal (most solid
sounding signal) or deepest null (I often like to rotate for deepest null).
