I gave up on CFLs for the garage. They don't do worth a flip for intermittent
service, especially in cold temperatures. My supposed 5,000 hour 300W
equivalent CFLs lasted less than 6 months in VERY limited usage. I recently
bought some 50W equivalent (39W usage) halogen "spot" lamps for the porch
lights. Lots brighter in "can" fixtures than straight 60W incandescents and
will most assuredly last longer. They really light up the driveway close in!

I may try some of those "expensive" LED lamps, but I stocked up on 130V rated
incandescents (still available as special/rough service) and they seem to last
years at 122-124V. They are truly efficient with regard to cost vs service
life. My results with CFLs has not been good with respect to life.
