Steve,

To make the letter A on a single lever paddle we:

1. push paddle to right with forefinger.
2. release forefinger from paddle.
3. push paddle to left with thumb.
4. release thumb from paddle.

If you keep pushing on the right, you won't move the paddle to the right with
the thumb.  You have to release with a single-lever paddle just like you do with
a double-lever paddle.
