Hi: There is a fairly simple explanation of the various reciever specs in 
late model ARRL Handbooks.  After you go through that, pull a few mid to top 
end reciever tests from QST and compare them, and go back over the Handbook 
until you have a good grip on the specs.

They don't tell it all, but they are a start.
