Differente radios have different sensitivities to RF on the microphone
cable. Tentecs sometimes are among the more sensitive. A ground may
help. Toroids around the microphone cable at the radio end may help.
Bypass capacitors may help. Changing the impedance of the MD-50 may
help.

You get full peak power if you only tickle the ALC light. Significantly
more audio drive than that leads only to distortion. Average power on
SSB is rarely more than 30% of peak (or CW), more like 20%. Driving the
output to more power guarantees distortion.
