"Don't worry, be happy". Just put up what you can and go with it. You'll be surprised at what you can work (contests add 20 dB to every signal). I'm about 25 miles northwest of Detroit and I have a 130 foot bent dipole fed with ladder line about 20 feet off the ground. For the 160 contests, I tie both legs together and feed it as a top loaded vertical. My "radials" are the copper plumbing and furnace ductwork in the house. Every year, I usually manage to work Hawaii, so assuming reciprocity still holds true, you should be able to work the mainland...
