actually you are both right, and wrong. According to Kurt Sterba, , it does
tune the ANTENNA SYSTEM by matching the antenna to the radio. so no, it does
not tune the antenna, but yes it tunes the antenna system which is what the
rig see out the back door..and what used to be called a coupler and now its a
tuner, but more semantics than function. actually it should be known as an
impendence matcher to be correct.. eh

all the power out goes somewhere , even the reflected stuff gets re
reflected. all the power either goes out as radio waves, or heat, but it goes..
 Mr.
Sterba writes for World Radio, and has several books out too.. Just my
opinion, YMMV

Sorry, but that's misleading. An ATU when installed between your rig
and your coax does not have a way to selectively tune just the antenna.
It simply provides an impedance match from the rig to the feedline. If
there are mismatches between the feedline and the antenna, they will
remain.

Install the same unit at the antenna feedpoint and voila, you have an
antenna tuner!

It's not mistakenly called an antenna tuner. It's called an antenna
tuner because it tunes the antenna. It even tunes antennas for people
who do not believe it is doing so.
