I have my old favorite being a Heath SB-610 that I use. I just wish these things were still made and folks would use them. I would expect that some of the new amps might not look so good. That is assuming folks would learn to know what they are looking at. I believe the bands would be a good bit cleaner.

Woops! Thanks for the correction, Bob. I should have said "using the TUNE and LOAD controls as per the manual." My purpose was to point out the usefulness of a monitor scope in keeping a signal linear.

Right way and wrong way. First be sure you are on the correct antenna and
the SWR is 2:1 or less. Be sure the amp bandswitch is on the correct band.
Also, preset the TUNE and LOAD controls per the suggested values in the
manual.

For amps like the Centurion apply an amount of drive, 10 to 30 watts, and
adjust TUNE and LOAD controls, in that order, for max output. Continue by
increasing the drive and touching up tuning and load controls for max output
until maximum rated plate current {never exceed 800 ma absolute max}and
maximum rated grid current {260 ma max} are obtained. Do not apply more
drive if either of these maximum values are reached. TUNE controls plate
current and LOAD controls grid current. If you wish to operate at lower
power then reduce the drive to attain the power you desire. Do not retune
the amp. Let the transceiver ALC do its job and control power for SSB or CW
operation.

If you do not have adequate drive to get the amp to maximum values of 800 ma plate current and 260 ma of grid current, then apply all the drive you have
and tune for max output but never so as to exceed the max values for plate
and grid.

Bob:

I also have an Orion II and Centurion. I tune the Centurion to resonance
using the Orion TUNE button. I then use a monitor scope with triangle
pattern to adjust the Centurion Load control and Orion audio drive to obtain
max linearity. The Centurion output leds read around 600 watts out on ssb
voice. Don't know how proper this is, but works for me. If anyone out
there has a better method, let us know.

I have an Orion II and a Centurion, which work very well together. No
surprise there, hi.

What does it mean to tune up the linear as normal with maybe 50-75 watts
and "then adjust the ALC adjustment until the power output goes to
maximum." I don't understand the quoted part and I will probably be
embarrassed when I get an answer!

Thanks for the help,
