Interesting that you leave the transmit power at 100w and control the
output
by reducing the audio drive. Wouldn't that underdrive the output and
introduce non-linearities? I have always reduced the Orion power output to
25w
and
then adjusted the audio drive to just below the ALC lighting up. I don't
remember having to change settings from band to band.

What say list? Which is the better way to control the PSK output?

Hi Craig,

I don't have an IMD meter and my test equipment is a little limited but I
have monitored the output using a Yaesu YO-901 monitor scope and can see
no difference in the output as long as the ALC is not coming into operation.

I use the AUX input to drive the ORION and the setting varies from a value
of 30 to 70, this is from 80 to 10mtrs, this is to maintain an approximate
30watt output.
The ALC function appears linked to the power level setting and using the
power level control to set the output in my view makes the likelihood of a
worse IMD value. I am by no means a expert on the theory of how the ORION
functions so I also would be interested in any comments from other users.

I did comment on the band to band variation to TenTec and they advised it
was quite normal for the type of PA in the ORION.
