Even though the Coast Guard supposedly abolished the need for CW in 1999,
some maritime CW operation continues, largely through the efforts of the
Maritime
Radio Historical Society, a group made up mostly of retired station ops from
KPH in California. They periodically put KPH back on CW, as well as KSM, a
newly-licensed commercial coast station which they established. Most of them
are also hams. Google them for more info.

The FCC requirement for a T1 license to serve as chief op of a US passenger
ship still remains.

Ray W2RS (and T2 plus radar endorsement -- never qualified for the service
endorsement for a T1)
