The Tentec mikes, both the 705 desk mike and the hand mike do require a
polarizing voltage as they are electret elements, thus the need for the +
voltage from pin #4. As to other mikes, dynamic mikes do not require any
power so no connection to pin 4 is needed. Wiring of the connector is as
follows: pin #1 is mike or audio input, pin #2 is ground, pin #3 is PTT,
and pin #4 is +4VDC.
Now you say "low voice peaks". Compared to what and how are you measuring
voice peaks? Does the radio produce 100 watts in the TUNE mode? It should.
If so, then switching USB or LSB, the PWR control fully to the right, thus
maximum power just like in TUNE, advance the MIC gain until the ALC LED
flashes frequently on voice peaks. Normally the PROC is not activated. Try
it both ways, PROC switch in and PROC switch out. Any difference? There is
an internal processor level adjustment as well as the PROCESSOR on the
front. The front PROC control adjusts the amount of processing as observed
on the meter and the internal adjustment set the processor output level such
that when switching between no processing and processing there is no level
shift except that average level goes up. Normal processing level as seen on
the meter should show voice peaks swing up to the black bar. I've found
that excessive processing begins to cause SSB to sound squashed and
unpleasant to listen to. It also modifies the sound of the voice and makes
it loud for cutting through QRM.
To set things properly a monitor scope such as the old Heath SB-610 or
HO-10 is a real help.

hi, recently i reported having low voice peaks on my paragon when using a
shure 444d mic. earlier today i wired up a realistic mic tried it on the
paragon and again the voice peaks are low. in both cases (the shure and
realistic mics) pin 4 of the connector, which is the power pin is not wired
so there is no power from the radio to the mic - i notice with the ten tec
mics (hand mics and desk mics) there is power supplied to the mics. can lack
of power to the mic be causing the low voice peaks - i have a ten tec hand
mic on order, should have it on mondey or tuesday and i will try it then -
just wondering.
