Howdy, I was the Vice President, Engineering of a company that pioneered the
high frequency electronic ballast and compact fluorescent lamps. Being a
ham, I made sure that we met the FCC requirements for RFI. No problems with
our products. However, in China there are some companies that print phony
FCC labels on their product and leave out the components that reduce RFI in
order to save money. You will be safest if you buy product from Philips, GE
and Osram. If you buy a complete fixture, then make sure the ballast inside
is from one of the above.

I use the florescent replacement bulbs throughout my house, and have large
florescent fixtures in the radio room. Haven't noticed any increase in
interference here. Ambient noise on 20 meters was about S1.

Actually, since we will be here for a number of months, I think we'll
find an apartment. Lots of them have balconies here on the upper floors
so hanging out an antenna should be pretty easy.

The other hotel problem is that most of them seem to be using these
florescent replacement bulbs now and I don't know if that is the source
or not, but I have an S6 to S7 noise level that just sounds like hash
noise. I tried tuning around 40m a few times today, but no signals
above the noise level.

Hopefully we will have an apartment in a couple of weeks and try again.

Thanks for the suggestions :)

Wayne
