Denton,

The internal speaker may have picked up metal particles which short circuit 
the air gap between the magnet and coil causing the cone to drag and distort 
sound.   A gentle vacuuming of the inside of the cone might pick up any 
debris like that.  A tissue sometimes can be used to pass thru the air gap 
and remove metal filings.
