If you happen to "view" a multi media file with sound, the sound can 
transmitted over the air as it trips the VOX. Using a serial port (or USB to 
serial) to initiate PTT provides control to avoid accidental VOX transmission. 
I've made the VOX mistake and I often hear others sending audio instead of 
PSK-31 data.
