Geoff...

You are correct about the on-board support battery, which on s/n prior to 585-395 required the addition of a charging circuit.

I was referring to the Dallas MC146818AP Rom/Rom/Rtc chip on the daughter board, which has its own battery and lasts for 10+ years at worst.

It is possible some of the Paragons had other than Dallas chips, and some of them did not have on-chip batteries.

Check out: http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=30273&seqNum=15

Sorry for the confusion.

sites with that chip number.

The Pargaon came with two versions of the battery. The earlier one
used a standard 9v battery. The later one added a charging circuit and
replaced the battery with a 9v NiCad.

I did a quick web search and found this page:

If you look at the picture of the rig being placed on the bench for
the first time, you can see the battery quite clearly in the center of
the radio (from right to left) in the rear. If you look at the front
just left of the display, and follow it back, you'll see it.

He also discusses the charging modification later in the text.

New word I coined 12/13/09, "Sub-Wikipedia" adj, describing knowledge
or understanding, as in he has a sub-wikipedia understanding of the
situation. i.e possessing less facts or information than can be found
in the Wikipedia.
