One good thing about some of the CAT programs, such as N4PY and dxlab
commander, is that you can run the programs, and then just use the
radio's front panel for controls. This setup gives you a lot of
flexibility in how you use and control and log.
For example, you can use the CAT program to do everything. Never
touching the front panel for anything
Or
You can use the front panel of the rig to change everything you want to change.
What this method gives you, is the CAT program polling the rig, the
steppir listens to these polls and when you change freq and mode via
the front panel, the steppir will know (within the polling intervals
you setup in the CAT programs, very important to remember). The CAT
program is just sitting there, keeping the steppir serviced with it's
normal queries to the rig, and you aren't really using the CAT
program. However, if you want, you can then take advantage of the fact
that the CAT program is running and do something that the control
program can do easier than how it is to do the same thing via the
front panel of the rig. There are some value added functions that the
CAT programs can do that we really can't do within the firmware of the
rig in a clean manner. Such as how N4PY uses the remote pod connected
to the Orion for a lot of enhanced functionality.
