On events like Field Days, I have seen a tuner improve the signals some 3 dB, or maybe it was the combination of signal plus improvement in QRM, (lowering of the noise floor). For listening when the band is not crowded you may not notice the improvement in reception a tuner can afford. It will of course be essential in covering a band with the typical antenna.
