I obviously disagree. To me, it will never be about winning or losing
a contest. NEVER. It's about having fun.

My station hears reasonably well to Europe on 160M - I've got a 580ft
Beverage in that direction and I'm outside Albany NY. In a recent
160M contest, I tuned up the band picking off one weak European
station after another that was calling CQ in close proximity to a loud
domestic station that was oblivious to the presence of the Europeans.
THIS was fun. This would have been impossible with an upconverting
receiver.

The other obvious example of performance difference would be if you
occasionally/often "run" (call cq) in crowded cw contests. It's only
a matter of time before a strong station gets too close to you on
either side. You're going to have to move with an Omni 7. You can
often stay put, unhindered, with an Orion etc.

Yes, the Omni 7 will perform equally in 95% of the cases, but it's the
other 5% that I really appreciate the radio.

Not over blown, not just a statistic - the performance difference is what it is.
