If you are in S&P mode in a contest, a panadapter is a great asset to have.

Seems you can use PowerSDR (or at least HDSDR) with any number of low
cost SDR receivers and get that job done at low cost. Anything form the
FunCube Dongle for $50, to the German Fifi by FunkAmateur for $100, or
an Elad SDR for $300, or any number of $150-$200 solutions, should do
the fancy receiver bit on the cheap. Heck, I had great results using a
TenTec RX-320 witn NrPY software as a second receiver with the Omni VII.
But I don't consider a panadapter all that valuable in a contest
setting, anyway. If you look at the gallery of contest shacks on the
Elecraft site, there are very few panadapter screens in view. You don't
seem to need one with your setup.

Now, as for the Eagle's one way step control... I don't see how that
could be such a big problem. Are you really missing contacts because the
step button only goes one way? Does pressing it three or four times
quickly really hold you up? Are you gonna buy a new rig because of THAT?
Really?

Remember, if you get a Flex 6300, you are fairly well compelled to have
a window dedicated to rig control... and you just rejected that idea
without reservation. You won't be able to run the rig with just a Tmate
- it interfaces with the Flex program or N4PY or SOMETHING... and you
just said don't want a rig interface running in the background.

I am not following you on this one...

Of course your suggestion works. But it's slow and total overkill.

My sole complaint about the Eagle and working with my contest software
is,
the VFO "step" button only steps in one direction and my logging software
can't address that.
As a result, I often must push the same button 4 times.
