The bottom line is most people cake on the penetrox or noalox or whatever 
MUCH too thick.  

I take a small amount and wipe it on the aluminum piece to be inserted 
and then wipe off 98% of it off with a towel.  Eventually the towel has 
enough on it to be used as the applicator.
