I often see questions like the above on the reflector and
there are alot of answers.

I look at the spacing question in various ways.

1. I like to keep the spacing between the antennas close enough
so that I can stand on the top of the tower and just reach
the upper antenna. The reason is that I want to be able to
reach and take down the antennas without having to take
out the rotator and lower the mast thus making the job much
harder and longer to do. For this I will trade off some
performance. This can be the time diffrence between fixing
that bad connection just before the SS - and not having a
   20m yagi.

2. If x amount of space is all you have - then just do it -
try it - in most cases it will work. Yes there maybe some
interaction etc. but if it is the diffrence between
having a beam up in the air doing some good and having
it on the ground - I always opt for having it up in the air.
(unless it make something else unuseable.)

Have fun.
