I also was suspicious that the ground rod was galvanized.  But,  it is indeed 
cad-plated.  Cad-plating has got to be a lot more expensive than galvanizing. 
 Perhaps the additional cost has been substantiated??

Thanks for the comments on the pool testing kit.  Good idea -- never heard of 
that one!
