You obviously are not aware of the tremendous tensions sustained by "back
guys" used on utility pole line ends. Screw augars are used commonly all
over the country for such with power lines, CATV and telephone cables,
pulling against them. Careful engineering of the significant streeses, is
behind such use. Very few ever fail. The reported failure was more likely
an anchor with scarred or damaged galvanizing, which allowed rust to invade.
Caveat here is to give careful inspection to all anchors prior to
installation, especially used ones.
